Our (GOTY) Game Of The Year (Best Games Of 2020) UPDATED

Selphie1999s Game Of The Year Uncategorized Compilations / Easter Eggs

Another year is almost upon as we say farewell to 2020, whilst for the most obvious reason the year has not been that amazing. A year that has seen several parts of the industry being effected by the still on-going Corona Virus pandemic that has been plaguing the world for just over a year now.

However, thankfully it didn’t stop the amazing… or not so amazing games being released this year despite this.

Also, outside of the whole gaming genre this year was also the year which saw this website get created and it has thankfully seen a fast growth these past few months too, stemming from below 100 views a day to almost 20,000 views a month now in just under 5 months.

Anyway, this page will basically feature a list of our favourite games of the year 2020

(Note: Yes. I know game characters do not count as video games exactly. However, I got the idea to add various characters as believe it or not the official Spike Video Game Awards used to do this before eventually stopping, it was interesting to watch people vote for characters. Also, lets admit it’s the characters that make our journey through video games that much more enjoyable, right?)

(GOTY) GAME OF THE YEAR

  • GAME: Pillars Of Eternity II: Deadfire
  • DEVELOPER: Obsidian Entertainment
  • PUBLISHER: Versus Evil
  • PLATFORM: Playstation 4 / XBox One
  • RELEASE DATE: January 28, 2020
  • OFFICIAL SITE: Pillars Of Eternity II: Deadfire
  • OUR THOUGHTS:
  • Pillars Of Eternity II: Deadfire is the updated version of Pillars of Eternity II which contains all of the downloadable content, including; Beast of Winter, Seeker, Slayer, Survivor and The Forgotten Sanctum

Though the story does continue from where the original title left off, there is an option to recap the events of the game should you wish to skip to this title instead. You can also choose story related outcomes from the original title too, which is great for those coming from the original title and not being able to transfer your data over or just basically wanting to change a few outcomes instead.

The game is classed as a Classic RPG with both turn-based and strategic combat. With the ability to create your own custom character including appearance, backstory, class and race.

The characters that can be recruited and join you during the game are great too, full of character depth and personality.

There is also the ability to complete side quests and improve your overall bond with your companions too. Overall, these are our particular favourite game genre in a world where sadly these type of games are becoming much more scarce. Relaxing and full of companion bonding, interaction and a world that is really easy to immerse yourself into. Can’t really fault it and thus it gets our Game Of The Year title!

BEST FIRST-PERSON SHOOTER

  • GAME: Doom Eternal
  • DEVELOPER: id Software
  • PUBLISHER: Bethesda
  • RELEASE DATE: March 20, 2020 (PC, PS4, Stadia, XBox One), December 8, 2020 (Switch)
  • PLATFORM: PC, Playstation 4, Stadia, XBox One, Nintendo Switch
  • OFFICIAL SITE: Doom Eternal
  • OUR THOUGHTS: Our Review

Doom Eternal is the fifth title in the Doom series and is a sequel to 2016’s Doom.

It pits players in a mission to save Earth from the now-corrupt Union Aerospace Corporation.
Earth has also been 60% wiped out, thus the Demon Slayer finds out about this and seeks to become the hero.

Just like with Doom 2016 players will be able to combat various different demons in various different areas, some fan favourite demons such as the Revenant and Cacodemons also make a come back alongside some new ones too. Read More

BEST PSVR TITLE

Marvel’s Iron Man VR swoops in on our next review and it is quite a flight, I mean delight!

Lets be honest here we have all dreamed of wanting to fly and see the clouds close up surely? I mean the view from the sky can be quite captivating, and what better way than to do so whilst strapped in the boots of the iconic, Iron Man!

I’ll admit I’m not that clued up on the world of Marvel (being more of a DC fangirl). However, this game was actually quite enjoyable.
I personally love PSVR titles and will always have a soft spot for them now that I have finally been able to experience the thrill of Virtual Reality. The whole immersion and feeling of being free and lost in another world is quite amazing! Read More

BEST SURVIVAL HORROR GAME

After the success of Resident Evil 2 Remake last year, a lot of fans where hoping for more and thus along came Resident Evil 3 Remake.

For those who may be unaware the events of both Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 happen rather close to each other, with the latter half of Resident Evil 3 being when the events of Resident Evil 2 begin.
Thus within Resident Evil 3 there are quite a few familiar locations that are also in Resident Evil 2 such as the infamous and one of our personal favourite locations in video games, Raccoon City Police Department.
Though it may sound a bit strange to some, that very Police Station holds a lot of nostalgia and memories for us so we where looking forward to seeing it once again and reliving those scary flashbacks.
Also for the first time to Resident Evil 3 several cameos of some rather familiar Resident Evil 2 characters also make an appearance. We won’t spoil but it was great to see them. Read More

BEST RPG TITLE

  • GAME: The Legend Of Heroes: Trails Of Cold Steel IV
  • DEVELOPER: Nihon Falcom
  • PUBLISHER: NIS America
  • RELEASE DATE: October 27, 2020
  • PLATFORM: Playstation 4
  • OFFICIAL SITE: The Legend Of Heroes
  • OUR THOUGHTS: Game Review
  • The latest and last entry into the emotional roller-coaster RPG series. Packed with all of the mechanics and characters that we have grown fond of through the previous games, speaking of which it is HIGHLY recommended to play the previous titles before this one as the story does follow on from the last title. So if you plan on playing this without prior knowledge from the past games then be ready for some major spoilers.
  • Our full review is currently in progress but from what we have currently played of this title (several hours now), I truly feel like this title deserves this spot in our list. Our full review can be found here

BEST SOUNDTRACK

  • GAME: Cyberpunk 2077
  • DEVELOPER: CD Projekt Red
  • PUBLISHER: CD Projekt Red
  • RELEASE DATE: December 10th, 2020
  • PLATFORM: PC, PS4, Stadia, XBox One
  • OFFICIAL SITE: Cyberpunk 2077
  • OUR THOUGHTS:
  • Despite the game’s current flaws, the same cannot be said about the actual soundtrack. Composed by P. T. Adamczyk, Marcin Przybyłowicz and Paul Leonard-Morgan with help from the band Refused, the soundtrack offers a range of techno beats and heavy metal all of which tends to fit the game quite nicely.

BEST MULTIPLAYER

  • GAME: Marvel’s Avengers
  • DEVELOPER: Crystal Dynamics
  • PUBLISHER: Square Enix
  • RELEASE DATE: September 4th, 2020
  • PLATFORM: PC, PS4, XBox One, Stadia
  • OFFICIAL SITE: Avengers
  • OUR THOUGHTS:
  • Whether you are playing as the Thunder God ‘Thor’, the gun-wielding Black Widow or someone else in the Avengers universe each character has their own unique abilities. These abilities can then be used to help fellow players out in terms of completing the more difficult challenges or if you simply want a change from having to play solo. The multiplayer option will allow players to hook up as a team of up to 4 to take on hordes of enemies or to solve vault puzzles. (Our Marvel’s Avengers Review: Marvel’s Avengers Review)

BEST SPORTS GAME

  • GAME: Tony Hawk’s Pro-Skater 1 & 2
  • DEVELOPER: Vicarious Visions
  • PUBLISHER: Activision
  • RELEASE DATE: September 4th, 2020
  • PLATFORM: PC, Playstation 4, XBox One
  • OFFICIAL SITE: Tony Hawk Pro Skater
  • OUR THOUGHTS:
  • Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 & 2 is a HD remake of the old Playstation One titles, for us this was a nice trip down nostalgia lane. The game comes complete with all of the original skating locations including our personal favourite, The Hanger. As well as that the original skateboarders are also back, including some new ones too.

BEST INDIE GAME

  • GAME: Streets Of Rage 4
  • DEVELOPER: Dotemu, Guard Crush, Lizardcube
  • PUBLISHER: Dotemu, Yooreka Studio (Greater China)
  • RELEASE DATE: April 30th, 2020
  • PLATFORM: PC, Switch, PS4, XBox One
  • OFFICIAL SITE: SOR4
  • OUR THOUGHTS:
  • Just when you think the series will never make a much needed return, BOOM! Streets of Rage 4 is announced. The last Streets Of Rage title was released over 26 years ago and despite Streets Of Rage 4 being created by a brand new team, it still manages to feature the all to familiar beat-em-up fighting mechanic, as well as a nostalgic arcade look.

FAVOURITE FEMALE CHARACTER

  • CHARACTER: Sara Valestein
  • GAME: The Legend Of Heroes: Trails Of Cold Steel IV
  • OUR THOUGHTS:
  • I’ll admit Sara has been my favourite character in the entire Trails of Cold Steel series, with a witty sense of humour and a passion for the occasional drink, she may come out as someone who is strict and bossy but deep down she is very caring and will do just about anything to keep her students safe from harm

FAVOURITE MALE CHARACTER

  • CHARACTER: Jackie Welles
  • GAME: Cyberpunk 2077
  • OUR THOUGHTS:
  • Though Cyberpunk 2077 itself leaves a lot to be desired, that doesn’t mean the game is completely without its merits. I mean take the character Jackie Welles for example, a man with great personality and a lot of respect for his friends and family. I have been a massive fan of this character since he was first revealed several years ago now, sadly though the game he features in really does not do him any justice.
