Amicia and Hugo just can’t catch a break.

A Plague Tale: Requiem is the latest sequel to Focus Entertainment’s critically-acclaimed game, A Plague Tale: Innocence.

A third-person action-adventure game that heavily adopts survival-horror and stealth elements into the mix, Requiem offers larger environments to explore and ingenious game mechanics to experiment with, offering more freedom for us to decide on how best to role-play as the protagonist, Amicia.

Focusing on the struggles of the de Rune siblings, Amicia and Hugo, Requiem expands on the Prima Macula curse that the younger brother is afflicted with.

Tired and frustrated, the de Rune family – including mother, Béatrice de Rune, and trusted novice alchemist, Lucas – embark on a new dangerous journey to finally end the dreaded curse once and for all.

Having been released recently, A Plague Tale: Requiem has already garnered overwhelming positive reviews, with PC Gamer’s Jon Bailes awarding a glowing 8.5 out of 10 rating for the game, concluding with:

“…Requiem takes us through the heights and depths of human experience, by not only working with children and animals, but letting them run the show.”

– Jon Bailes, PC Gamer

Featuring stunning visuals and superb animations, the game’s immersion level is through the roof. This isn’t taking the phenomenal voice acting and spectacular plot writing into account, promising more than 15 hours of game time.

That is if you don’t fail frequently and are not side-tracked by the gorgeous landscapes, of course.

Amicia’s Struggles

Following the onset of Hugo’s supernatural powers, it is up to his steadfast sister, Amicia, to ensure his safety and find a way to remove the family curse forever.

Requiem expands on its predecessor’s already-proven in-game mechanics, introducing new ways to stealthily avoid combat or go directly for the kills (not advisable).

Depending on how we choose to play as Amicia, experience is organically earned for 3 different skill trees, unlocking new traits and abilities.

These skill trees involve:

Prudence (Stealth)

  • Prudence enhances Amicia’s stealthy approach to avoiding unnecessary conflicts and bloodshed.

Aggressive (Combat)

  • Aggressive improves Amicia’s fighting proficiencies, making him more effective at killing enemies.

Opportunism (Crafting)

  • Opportunism helps Amicia become more efficient in creating alchemical items and managing resources.

Amicia is also able to upgrade her limited equipment and gear, most notably at a workbench. There are 4 different things that can be upgraded, each offering 3 different options to choose from:

Sling

  • Makes the Sling more deadly.

Alchemy

  • Makes alchemical ammo much more lethal.

Gear

  • Increases carrying capacity for different items.

Instruments

  • Allows Amicia to craft useful tools to facilitate crafting and upgrading.

There are many collectibles to be found throughout the whole game too, starting from Chapter 2: Newcomers.

With so many things to do, places to scour, and an engaging story to get lost in, A Plague Tale: Requiem could easily break into the Top 10 Video Games of 2022.

A Plague Tale: Requiem is playable now on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
