Former Bayonetta voice actress calls for boycott over “insulting” pay

The previous voice actress for Bayonetta, Hellena Taylor claims to have been offered just $4000 for the role

PlatinumGames have found themselves caught up in a whirlwind of controversy after ex- voice actress of the titular Umbra Witch, Bayonetta, came out with accusations of an immoral offer presented to her by PlatinumGames vice president Hideki Kamiya. Hellena Taylor called on fans to boycott the game through videos that have garnered at least 10 million views as of now. Her calls have been met with resounding support from fans who followed the actress from the first two games as well as the voice acting community.

Hellena Taylor claims to have been given an offer of just $4000 to voice the character, this was for four to five four house sessions in the studio. The claims sparked quite an uproar as the minimum pay for union actors is meant to be at least $900 per session. Other voice actors such as Bryan Dechart of Detroit: Become Human admit having received $4000 a session for the game Detroit: Become Human, a game of arguably similar stature.

The story became more convoluted when new reports arose that PlatinumGames did intend to rehire Hellena Taylor for the game, instead of replacing her with new voice actress, Jennifer Hale. The issue being that a deal could not be struck with Hellena Taylor, as she refused their offer for $3000 to $4000 a session citing a pay day of at least six figures. A claim Hellena Taylor vehemently refutes.

The new voice actress for Bayonetta 3 Jennifer Hale also published a statement regarding the recent controversy on a twitter post with the following message.

“Anyone who knows me, or has followed my career, will know that I have great respect for my peers, and that I am an advocate for all members of the community,” she said. “I am under NDA and am not at liberty to speak regarding this situation. My reputation speaks for itself.”

“I sincerely ask that everyone keep in mind that this game has been created by an entire team of hard-working, dedicated people and I hope everyone will keep an open mind about what they’ve created. Finally, I hope that everyone involved may resolve their differences in an amicable and respectful way,”

There has been no resolution to the issues surrounding PlatinumGames and Hellena Taylor, as both parties have stuck to their claims, with Hellena clapping back at PlatinumGames’ attempts to “save face” with the disclosure of their supposed deal. It is unlikely that fans of the game would boycott the game entirely based on the fact that they’ve been starved for another Bayonetta game for about a decade.  Regardless Hellena taylor has stated that she is willing to put the Bayonetta franchise behind her, separating herself from the controversy surrounding the release and would like to focus on her theatrical career instead.

Bayonetta 3 will be released on October 28th, 2022, and will be available on Nintendo Switch.
