Splinter Cell Remake Game Director departs

Splinter Cell Remake hits a bump in the road with the departure of Game Director

Arguably one of the most slept on franchises Ubisoft has at its disposal lay without activity for years on end, with the last release being a tear-inducing 9 years ago. Ubisoft kept mum about Splinter Cell’s future until December 2021 when it announced that a remake was in the works and would be coming sooner than we expected. The news obviously gave fans a glimmer of hope, but that glimmer was quickly snuffed out with the news that arrived quite recently.

The departure of Game Director David Grivel from Ubisoft made fans nervous as it isn’t a strong start and could spell trouble for the game already, but job listings posted by Ubisoft prove that the game is not yet in a state where his departure may affect the game greatly, as the game will be rebuilt from the ground up while still holding up the themes from past games.

Past efforts to revive the game franchise have been met with negative reviews, as fans felt mobile games and VR games were cheap efforts meant to milk the franchise’s name, and not meant to appease the fans.

Former Game Director David Grivel formally announced his departure on his LinkedIn page with the message below.

After more than 11 years at Ubisoft, it is now time for me to go on a new adventure.

11 years is a long time and summing it up in one post is quasi-impossible but I must say, I’ve been lucky. Lucky to work with so many great people over the years. Made so many friends.

From Ubisoft Paris (Ghost Recon Future Soldier), to Ubisoft Toronto (Splinter Cell Blacklist, Assassin’s Creed Unity, Far Cry Primal, 5, 6 and Splinter Cell Remake), I’ve had the opportunity to work on many franchises that I love as a gamer.

And so, I want to give a heartfelt thank you to everyone I worked with at Ubisoft and say “au revoir”. This is not “adieu” for ours is a small industry so I’m looking forward to our paths crossing again in the future.

As for what that new adventure is? Stay tuned 🙂

Game Director David Grivel left Ubisoft to work at another game studio yet to be named, and as far as we’re concerned there is no outright reason for his departure, but fans and everyone invested wish him the best in his endeavors.

“We can confirm that David Grivel has left Ubisoft and wish to thank him for his contributions,” a Ubisoft spokesperson said in a statement sent to PC Gamer. “His departure will not impact the game’s development.” (Via PC Gamer)

This statement made by a Ubisoft spokesperson at least tries to quash any worries fans may have of the game being drastically affected by the departure, as fans pointed out how the shortcomings of Splinter Cell Conviction were also a result of a troubled development cycle.

The Splinter Cell Remake is still in the works with a release date and further information yet to be announced
