(SH3) Shenmue III : Story Quest (DLC) – We Review Chawan Cups..What?

Game Reviews Reviews

Shenmue III Story Quest DLC is the second dlc in the Shenmue III game and despite it being called ”Story Quest” it actually has no real story to it, it also does not connect to the game’s actual story in any way, shape or form neither and thus with that in mind the title can perhaps be a bit misleading.

The so called ”story” is basically about Ryo coming across an old friend, one whom we personally cannot remember and wasn’t really a key character in either of the past games. He is merely an acquaintance, if nothing else.
Anyway Ryo comes across him and basically ends up in a never ending circle over betrayal and kidnap. Also, cups there are plenty of cups!
In fact I could simply end the review right here at the word cups as cups definitely sums up this dlc pretty well.
Your probably wondering what I’m referring to and well simply put for most if not the entire duration of this dlc, you will find yourself playing about with different cups in a so called mini game of ‘Chawan Sings’.
Chawan Signs are basically a reference from Shenmue II where the player needs to position several different cups in a certain position in order to achieve and accomplish certain tasks, sounds delightful doesn’t it?
Needless to say this specific dlc is not that great and has barely any real depth to it. There are some trophies and achievements that you can unlock if you want to but as with the game itself they too have issues.
Now we expect trophies and achievements to be a challenge to get and that is why only some people attempt these but in this game the description of how to unlock them are so vague, its almost impossible to unlock them yourself without either being really lucky or highly intelligent. There is nothing in the game, description or anything that actually helps with this.
OVERALL:

We where not really a big fan of the main game and this dlc is even worse, as fans of the past Shenmue games we feel so deflated at how poor the writing is and how little effort and thought has been put into this.
