Monster Hunter World Iceborne is an expansion for Monster Hunter World, it continues the story from where the base game ended.
This time the story, though still somewhat lacking but we do understand that the story is not the series strong point that is for the combat which again like its base game is very well executed. Anyway this time the story centres around seismic activity and a new dragon specie emerging and inflicting issues upon the world.
The combat as we said is really well done and well executed, though to be fair it isn’t much different from the base game anyway, the only new thing is the ability to grapple onto foes for extra damage, this may sound disappointing but to be fair why try and fix something that is not broken? the combat in the base game is really easy and enjoyable.
The game feels the same and nothing much is different, this we did feel rather let down and disappointed by. The thing that felt mostly disappointing is not the fact that a lot of it felt the same, we understand it is a simple expansion and thus will be like the base game. However, what we did not expect was that almost all of the monsters look the same as the monsters in the base game, meaning the story bosses are not much different from what we are already used to fighting. The only difference being is that the new story monsters have different names and sometimes different attacks too. However, for the most part they are no different from those we already know. It would of been nice if they invented new monsters for this one.
The High Rank level system is now replaced by Master Rank, though you can still accept and complete High Rank quests, just for the new story the level system is different. You also obviously start from scratch with the new rank system and this for the beginning section felt like a brand new game with new tutorials and such. Quite reminiscent to the base game.
OVERALL: The game is okay but due to how much of it feels the same as the base game, especially the ”new” monsters was a real disappointment. However, if you are looking for a simple story extension to the base game and do not care for new things like features and such then you may end up feeling less disappointed than we ended up being. The expansion is quite long though and probably on the same scale as the base game in terms of story length, there is also new quests available too. Considering the fact that Monster Hunter World was our Game Of The Year 2018, this one unfortunately we just could not get into due to how much of it felt the same and it in the end personally for us, it just got boring after a while.
