Solasta: Crown of The Magister is a Tactical CRPG that is based on the Dungeons & Dragons style of gameplay, in which it uses dice in order to determine the outcome of battles and certain conversations.
This in our opinion makes the game much more fun and more of a challenge as you never know what the dice will roll, of course certain criteria such as specific spell abilities can always tip the dice to your favour should you have those particular abilities unlocked of course.
As well as that just like with Dungeons & Dragons Solasta: Crown of The Magister is set within a fantasy style universe with Dragons, Magic and of course lovable Goblins. I blame a certain Baldur’s Gate III for making me like those critters.. Anyway, slowly moving on the game also tends to give off a medieval vibe too which is the usual setting for CRPG and one of the reasons why we enjoy this genre so much
As you begin Solasta: Crown of The Magister you are instantly given the option to create your own customized character including hairstyle, gender and class all of which have their own set of abilities. However, if you tend to find yourself being a bit fussy then you can select one of the several already premade characters at your disposal as well as your companions, you must have a set party before the game will let you continue. For me I felt a bit disappointed with this as I enjoy coming across my companions over the course of the game rather than having to select who I want prior to even playing the game, I’m not saying this is a bad thing though more of a surprise if anything for a better word on our overall opinion on this. Plus doing this makes us miss out on the other non-selected characters and getting to know their personality, though I can’t help but feel that for the most part these characters all have basic personalities anyway.
The game has quite a handful of different side quests that you can then undergo, most of which are connected to the main story and thus more difficult to miss out on actually activating. This we thought was a great idea as there is nothing worse than not knowing about certain quests and then having to go back just so you can experience it, even worse if the quest has a much needed item connected to it.
However, one minor setback is the linearity of the game. For example if you manage to activate a side quest the game will then not allow you to complete it or advance it until that part of the story is complete, you are stuck with having to follow the main quest and travel to its locations rather than been given the freedom of choice to travel somewhere else and then return to the main story.
Something that we did notice though within the game is that the whole crafting mechanic plays a major role, though you can purchase goods from vendors you are just simply better off crafting your own gear instead. The game is riddled with various different crafting ingredients and recipes that you can’t help but find something better and more efficient this way.
The crafting is easy enough to work out too and can be done during those long travels to various different locations of the World Map.
The voice acting is great and the dialogue options are okay, though a lot of the time the dialogue doesn’t really change anything and you are forced to expire them all anyway. I have only witnessed one or two dialogue options with different outcomes, a minor disappointment but perhaps that is just a reflection of being spoilt after having played too much Baldur’s Gate III prior to this title.
Overall it is an enjoyable game with very minor issues to be had. It certainly helped scratch more of our CRPG itch.
