What is Gortash’s Netherstone?
Gorthas’s netherstone is one of the three netherstones located within the world of Baldurs Gate 3. When combined together, these stones will give you the power to defeat the Elder Brain, who is essentially the mastermind behind all of the infections, mind flayers, and general chaos that you encounter throughout the game.
This is therefore one of the most powerful objects in the entire game. And to get Gortash’s netherstone, you will need to fight with everything you have.
How to Find Gortash
Finding Gortash is definitely the easiest part of the quest. He is located inside the Wyrm’s Rock Fortress. To get to this fortress, you will have to enter Baldur’s Gate. You can get to Baldur’s gate pretty easily once you’ve completed Act 1 and Act 2. In fact, there are two different routes to get into Baldurs Gate. These are:
- The Mountain Pass. The mountain pass is located west of Wuakeen’s Rest. Once you’ve passed this checkpoint, head north, past the clearing where you meet Karlach. If you keep taking the road north, you will eventually find the pass and can get through to Baldurs Gate City. However, be warned that this route will be swarming with Githyanki patrols. This will be less of a problem if you have Lae’zel in your party, but you’ll almost always get into a fight by taking the mountain pass. You’ll also have to travel much further through the Shadow-Cursed lands with the mountain pass route, which is always a risk.
- The Underdark Route. The Underdark route is arguably the best way to get into Baldurs Gate City. The best way to get to Baldurs Gate City via the Underdark is by passing through the Hag’s Lair. Once you reach this, head to the Gymforge, which will give you access to the Act 2 map, where you can eventually get to the Last Light Inn without any trouble.
How to Get Gortash’s Netherstone

Once you’re inside Baldurs Gate City, you should be able to find the Wyrms Rock Fortress entrance easily- it’s just on the east side. However, when you try to enter the Fortress, it’ll turn out to be locked. To bypass this, you can follow a secret pathway and enter the fortress from another side.
The secret pathway can be found by jumping down from the balcony along the Wyrm’s crossing. You should then be able to see a crack in the wall. Jump to this crack, and break the wall using heavy or blunt weapons. This will put you face-to-face with a guard. Kill him and take his keys. From here, you’ll be able to enter the Fortress with the keys.
Once you’re in the fortress, finding Gortash will be very straightforward. Just head down the path to the main hall- he’ll be waiting for you here.
Defeating Gortash
When you arrive in the main hall, you’ll be greeted by Gortash, who will immediately turn hostile. Your first thought might be to run in, guns-blazing, but this isn’t the best strategy. The hall is actually full of traps that can kill you very quickly. So, it’s better to take a slightly more methodical approach.
Aside from the traps, a number of lieutenants protect Gortash. It’s a good idea to focus fire on these enemies first. They’re not difficult to kill, but if you leave them, they can start to become very frustrating.
Once you’ve taken out the lieutenants, it’s time to take on Gortash himself. You should notice that Gortash is protected by a strong shield that makes most of your attacks useless. You’ll also notice that bombs are constantly hurled at you and your party. If you time it correctly, you can actually throw these bombs back at Gortash. This is by far the best way to defeat him, as the bombs do a lot of damage. They can even bypass his shield, making it the only effective way to bring his HP down.
Throughout the fight, Bane powers Gortash. This will give him added abilities such as summoning the Hand of Shadow, which is a huge hand that slams down in the middle of the room, dealing huge damage to anyone that it hits.
This fight will be tough. But, as long as you can throw the bombs back at Gortash quickly, and avoid the Hand of Shadow’s attacks, you should come out victorious. Once you kill him, the Get Gortash’s Netherstone quest will be complete.
Rewards for Defeating Gortash
Alongside the netherstone and a decent chunk of XP, defeating Gortash will grant you the following items:
- Gortash’s Fabricated Arbalest. This item has a +2 weapon enchantment, Dazzling Ray, and an Illuminating Shot.
- Netherstone-Studded Gauntlet. This item gives a +1-4 force damage for unarmed attacks, and a +1 to spell save difficulty class.
These items are surprisingly good and will help you to take on later bosses like Orin and even the Elder Brain. So don’t neglect them!
Get Gortash’s Netherstone – Final Thoughts
Ultimately, Get Gortash’s Netherstone is a very hard quest in Baldurs Gate 3. But, as long as you stick to this guide, you should be able to get rid of this boss in no time and progress one step further to destroying the Elder Brain and freeing the people of Baldurs Gate 3.
