Baldur’s Gate III (BG3) has several main story quests which have all been separated into three different acts. As well as a prologue chapter too.
Each of these quests have several quests within a much longer storyline. Take the prologue quest, Escape the Nautiloid, for example which also features the Rescue the Illithid’s Captive as part of the quest. These could be considered as branches that is part of the main quest. Additional objectives, so to speak.
However, these additional objectives are part of the main questline and thus cannot be missed or skipped as long as you continue to adventure through the game.
The main story of Baldurs Gate 3 allows players to select from a range of different dialogue options and a lot of these outcomes are dependant on a dice roll. So it is always best to save during your quests!
