How to Defeat the Riven Twins in No Rest for the Wicked

Game Guides No Rest For The Wicked

While attempting to unlock the Ancient Gate in No Rest for the Wicked, your path will be blocked by the Riven Twins. They’re the hardest boss to defeat at this point because they have the ability to use Plague magic against you. To make beating the Riven Twins easy, I’ll walk you through their attacks, dodging, and the best opportunities for hitting them during the fight.

Riven Twins Boss Battle Walkthrough in No Rest for the Wicked

The Riven Twins start with a set of moves that increases after they lose 30% of their health. I’ll explain the sets of their moves as you progress through the battle. These move sets do stack, so they’ll use a mix of everything as the battle comes to an end.

Starting Attacks

The main physical attack of the Riven Twins is a large swing of their hammer. They’ll do one sweep, after which they’ll be stunned.

The stun is long enough for you to get four good hits in with a sword.

If you stay too close to them when they recover, they’ll give you a kick to knock you down then slam the base of their weapon down where your body is. You’ll have just enough time to roll out of the way before their weapon comes down if you’re careful.

They may also slam there weapon on the ground three times in succession. Move very quickly in this section because they can somewhat predict where you’ll be. If they hit you with the first or second, they’re very likely to hit you with the next one as well.

The other physical attack you’ll see in the beginning is slamming their weapon down horizontally in front of them. This is pretty easy to avoid, as rolling backward will get you out of range.

The main magical attack of the Riven Twins is a projectile that gives you the Plague status effect when it hits. This is essentially a poison and it cannot be blocked with your shield, so you must avoid it. When the twin on the back coughs, the other will grab at their chest to get a projectile. They’ll wind their arm back and throw it directly at you wherever you are in the room.

Riven Twins Attacks After Losing 30% Health

Once you get the twins to about 70% health, they’ll begin introducing new attacks. The most dangerous of these is the new magical attack. When the twin coughs and they grab their chest, instead of throwing they may slam their hand on the ground. This will create a puddle of purple ooze wherever you are currently standing. If you’re next to it when it pops or walk through it, you’ll be poisoned. To make matters worse, the weaker they are the more puddles they will create in one go.

They will have a large area attack. By slamming the base of their weapon on the ground, they’ll create a spikes in waves coming out of them. There will also be a wind of plague coming towards you. They’ll do three strikes here, which I recommend avoiding by heading as far away in the room as possible.

The second most dangerous attack is their ability to grab you if you’re too close. They will slam you on the ground a few times, which already deals a lot of damage. However, I’ve found that after they drop me, the game slams my body an extra time. I’m unsure as to if this is a bug or if their animation is glitched, but regardless it practically guarantees that being grabbed will kill or nearly kill you. Make sure to keep your distance after attacking for the best chance of winning.

They will have their usual swing attack, but they may also swing two or three times in a row. They will be stunned whether they swing once or three times, making these slow swings still the best time to attack.

Additionally, they will be able to perform a faster set of five smaller swings. I recommend pulling back while they swing, running up for quick attack, then pulling back again.

Luckily, the Riven Twins will not add any more attacks and won’t have a second phase. So long as you’re able to evade their attacks and deal enough damage, killing them will be relatively easy.
