Before the Battle
Before fighting Black Bear Guai, it’s recommended that you unlock the secret boss fight against Elder Jinchi where you’ll get the Fireproof Mantle. This will aid you in the battle against Black Bear Guai because it negates fire damage. You can unlock this secret battle by ringing three bells in the area.
- The first bell is right outside the shrine, next to the Guangzhi.
- The second bell is up the steps after the fight with Yaoguai Chief Guangmou.
- The third bell is along the main path after your fight with Whiteclad Noble.
Black Bear Guai’s Attack Pattern
During the first phase of the fight against Black Bear Guai, keep in mind that casting immobilize while in cloud form has no effect on him, however, it does have an effect on him in the second phase. If you immobilize him during a leaping attack, he might be too high in the air to hit so avoid doing this.
Black Bear Guai’s main attack includes using his bear claws to swipe at you and slam them into the ground. You have a small window in between combos to get a hit in. He also does a leaping attack, which is slow enough that you have time to dodge, and he has a cloud-step attack similar to his Black Wind King form.
Your best chance to get as many hits in as possible is when he does his jumping body slam attack. He lands on his back and it takes him a moment to recover.
During the second phase of the attack, fire surrounds his arms and he can now do burn damage. This is the perfect time to activate the Fireproof Mantle vessel. While it only temporarily negates fire damage, it definitely helps save a good chunk of your health.
He can also turn into his cloud form during this phase and he will repeatedly charge you. Dodge these attacks and use immobilize.
