Can you Play as Venom in Spider-Man 2?

The simple answer to the question, ‘Can you play as Venom’ is yes. While this may have been the answer that you’re looking for, there is a catch.

You can only play as Venom during a single mission where you, as Venom, take on Kraven in an intense battle.

While this may sound disappointing (and it is), there are a few upsides. For one, the mission where you get to play as Venom is one of the most enjoyable in the game. He has a completely different move set from Peter and Miles, making for some very interesting combat strategies. You also get to take on Kraven’s entire army, showcasing the sheer brute-force power of Venom.

However, it is a little confusing why Insomniac Games went to all the effort of creating a unique move set and excellent animations for Venom, all to showcase him for just one mission.

Who is Venom in Spider-Man 2?

Now that we’ve answered the question can you play as Venom in Spider-Man 2, let’s move on to another important issue. Who on earth is Venom?

Unless you’ve watched the original Spider-Man trilogy, read the comics, or have seen Sony’s ‘Venom’ movie, you’re likely completely unaware of who this villain is, and why so many people were excited to see him feature in Spider-Man 2.

Simply put, Venom is a sentient alien symbiote who survives and takes the form that you’ll recognize by bonding with a human host. When bonded with a human host, ‘Venom’ gains access to a wide range of abilities. These include super-human strength, durability, and healing. As well as the ability to shoot webs like Spider-Man.

In the comics, Eddie Brock is the human whom this symbiote chooses to morph with. However, in Spider-Man 2, the story is a little different. It’s actually Harry Osborn who is chosen as the symbiote’s host. Throughout the story, Peter also bonds with the symbiote temporarily.

Evolved Venom Abilities

As you play through the story, you’ll also encounter ‘Evolved Venom Abitlies’. Interestingly, these abilities have nothing to do with the question ‘Can you Play as Venom in Spider-Man 2’, and are completely separate from Venom.

Evolved Venom abilities actually refer to the electrical powers that the playable character Miles Morales learns throughout the story. Honestly, no one has any idea why Insomniac Games decided to name these abilities Venom abilities, because it makes things incredibly confusing!

There are four evolved venom abilities in total, each with its own unique strengths. You unlock each ability at certain points in the story. These abilities actually form a large basis of Miles’ combat style.

The evolved Venom abilities available to Miles include:

  • Thunder Burst- land a burst of Evolved Venom from a distance that knocks down any enemy in radius.
  • Chain Lightning- Targets an enemy with a huge bolt of lightning that chains two other enemies.
  • Reverse Flux- Pull enemies closer by releasing an Evolved Venom Energy Pulse.
  • Galvanize- Launches an enemy into the air, simultaneously shocking them. The more you hit this airborne enemy, the more lightning strikes you’ll produce.

You can use these abilities when playing as Miles. Simply hold down the L1 button and then press X/Circle/Triangle to initiate an ability.

Evolved Trophy Achievement

Although these evolved Venom abilities are unrelated to the question Can you play as Venom in Spider-Man 2? They are worth looking at if you want to 100% complete the game.

This is because the ‘Evolved’ achievement requires you to defeat 100 enemies with Evolved Venom Abilities. It’s worth a silver trophy.

If you thought that Evolved Venom Abilities were linked to the character Venom, you’d likely try to kill 100 enemies as Venom and never actually make any progress towards Evolved! But, all you actually have to do is take out 100 enemies with Miles’ electrical abilities, which is much easier.
