Echoes of Aincrad Death Game mode implements the permadeath mechanic, giving players a true Sword Art Online experience. You’d better be prepared if you want to survive this challenge.
Let’s see what you need to know about this mode!
How to Unlock and Survive the Echoes of Aincrad Death Game Mode
Death Game Mode presents an optional challenge for those wanting a genuine SAO experience. There is no trophy for beating the game on permadeath mode, but finishing the game without dying is an achievement in itself.
How to Unlock Permadeath in Echoes of Aincrad
There are two ways to unlock the Death Game mode:
- Complete the game once.
- Purchase the Deluxe or Ultimate Game edition.
Basic edition owners unlock the Death Game mode after clearing the game for the first time. Special edition owners can activate permadeath as soon as they complete the tutorial section.

No matter how you unlock the mode, you’ll be starting the game from scratch. Keep in mind that Echoes of Aincrad Death Game is not an additional difficulty setting or a NewGame+ experience. You’ll create a new character and complete the campaign from the beginning. Choose the desired difficulty option and check the permadeath option. You can change the difficulty setting at any time, but you cannot opt out of permadeath.
What Happens When You Die in Echoes of Aincrad Death Game Mode

Should you die in combat while permadeath is active, the save file is automatically and permanently deleted. There is no way to duplicate the saved data and continue the adventure. However, there are a few things you can do to improve your survival chances.
Clear the Game at Least Once
Even if you own the special editions, starting a Death Game with no previous game experience will most likely result in a quick death. Complete the game once, get familiar with the combat system, and learn the boss encounters before activating permadeath.
Choose the Story Difficulty Option
Play the game in Story mode, considerably lowering the combat difficulty.
Select Iori As Your Partner
Iori’s Circle Healing skill will come in handy, allowing you to save healing consumables.
Learn How to Block, Dodge, and Slash
These crucial combat mechanics make a big difference. Each character can perform these moves, but don’t forget that parries and perfect dodges depend on your gear. Learn how to trigger Slash attacks and practice on normal mode until you can correctly execute them.
Save Your Game Often
Don’t rely on auto-saves and checkpoints. Make a habit out of manually saving your game before heading into combat. Close the game using the in-game menu to be sure that your progress is correctly registered.
