Valor Mortis General Lothaire How To Defeat The First Boss

Valor Mortis General Lothaire, the Eagle-Bearer, is the first story boss you’ll encounter. Defeating him unlocks the Torn Banner trophy/achievement. Let’s see what you must do to bring him down!

How to Defeat General Lothaire in Valor Mortis

You’ll meet General Lothaire twice, the first time at the end of Chapter 1 and then in Chapter 2. The Chapter 1 encounter will most likely result in your death. This is a scripted encounter. While you can defeat him during the first fight, it is not required for story progression. Winning the second fight is mandatory.

How to Beat the First Boss in Valor Mortis

General Lothaire uses the same attack patterns in both encounters. However, the Chapter 2 fight is a bit easier, as you’ll have the pistol and Fire Transmutations. The encounter has two phases. Phase 2 begins after two posture breaks.

Weak Points

The large blisters on his legs and chest represent weak points. Shooting them deals extra damage and applies stagger.

Fire Vulnerability

The boss is weak to fire and gets staggered when you apply the flame debuff.

Weapon Swing Attack

Valor Mortis General Lothaire has a weapon swing attack that he performs several times in a row. You should parry this attack to break his posture and deal significant damage.

Ground Slam Attack

The boss raises his weapon and slams it into the ground. Move away or dodge to avoid taking damage.

When Phase 2 begins, you’ll notice that the weak points have regrown. Some of the attacks can no longer be parried, so you’ll have to dodge more often.

Adds

The boss summons adds. Take them down as soon as they spawn. The adds don’t have a lot of HP, so you can easily kill them with one hit. He will sometimes grab a corpse and throw it at you. You can shoot it midair or dodge it.

Swipe Attack

The boss uses his mutated arm to perform swipe attacks. Dodge or stay away from him until the attack ends.

Orb Attack

The boss summons an orb, which you can shoot to interrupt the attack. If you don’t interrupt the attack, you’ll have to dodge the AOE waves.

Phase 2 is more intense than Phase 1. Keep your distance from the boss while shooting his weak points. He is still vulnerable to fire, so aim to apply the flame debuff. Focus on dodging his attacks and you’ll eventually defeat him.
