Greatest Hits

The main reason why you’d want to find the crossbow in Alan Wake 2 is to unlock the ‘Greatest Hits’ trophy achievement. This is only worth ten points but is necessary for 100% game completion.

Interestingly, Greatest Hits is actually a secret achievement, so many players don’t even know it exists!

Aside from this, the crossbow is worth finding simply because it is one of the most enjoyable weapons in the game right now. Who doesn’t want to feel like Daryl Dixon walking through empty buildings, taking out bad guys in complete silence? Plus, the crossbow is actually very practical because you can reuse the same bolts over and over, mitigating any ammo issues.

However, the Crossbow does have its weaknesses. Primarily, the reload time is awful. And if you miss a shot, you might be dead before you even have a second chance!

How to Find the Crossbow

In order to find the Crossbow, you’ll need to head to Watery. Make sure you’ve unlocked this destination in the story mode before you start looking for the crossbow, or you won’t be able to unlock it.

When you arrive at Watery, head to the Cult Stash on the far east of the town. You should find this stash just outside the Hunting Shack near Coffee World. You’ll know you’re in the right place because there will be several rogue crossbow bolts wedged in the nearby trees.

When you get to the stash, you will see a note mentioning a crossbow. However, to actually unlock it, you will need to crack a combination lock. Luckily, this one is very easy to figure out, unlike with other weapons like the Sawed-Off shotgun.

To unlock the code, and ultimately find the crossbow, you just need to look at the nearby fence. You should see a bunch of numbers painted on it. Some of these numbers will have a crossbow bolt shot into them- these are the numbers needed to unlock the combination lock.

If you’re still struggling, the right combination is 527.

Once you plug in the right numbers, the case will open and you’ll be able to pick up the crossbow. From here, get a feel for the weapon by aiming a few shots into the fence with the numbers. Once you’re finished, don’t forget to recollect your bolts.

Where to Find Crossbow Ammo

On the subject of crossbow ammo, there are a few different places to stock up. Primarily, you should make sure to grab all of the rogue bolts around the Cult Stash where you picked up the crossbow. You can also pick up the bolts lodged into the fence.

Aside from this, you will be able to pick up ammo randomly as you explore. The good thing about the crossbow is that the ammo isn’t single-use, so you don’t need to be as reserved with your shots.

Crossbow Upgrades

After you find the Crossbow, you can upgrade it in a few different ways. Currently, the upgrades are as follows:

  • Pull the String- Allows you to hold the fire button to draw the Crossbow further, increasing the damage of each shot and straightening its arc.
  • Two Shots- Enables you to fire two shots before needing to reload.
  • Magnetic Pull- Bolts lodged into an enemy will attract bullets.

The best upgrade to go for is probably ‘Two Shots’. This is because the crossbow’s biggest drawback is its insanely long reload time. So, by doubling your shot capacity, you really mitigate this problem. A close second is ‘Pull the String’, which will allow you to take on tougher enemies with a single shot.
