Your first chance to capture your foe is during your very first encounter against the Quematrice. It will be optional, but it does allow you to capture if one choose to do so. Though, if you are new to Monster Hunter then you are likely going to be confused by all of this.

So in order to be able to capture a monster, you need two items: A trap and a tranquilizer. There are two types of traps, Shock Traps and Pitfall Traps, and three types of tranquilizers. Traps can be crafted. Both kinds of traps need a Trap Tool which you can buy from your base camp.

You’ll also have to craft tranquilizers. For the most part, Tranq Bombs will work during a fight. These are dropped at your feet when you use it. There’s also Tranq Ammo and Tranq Blade, both of which are fired from a distance.

First, use one of the traps when the monster is near death, indicated by a flashing skull by the monster on the mini-map. It’s important to know whether the monster you’re fighting is immune to the trap you’re using, otherwise it won’t work. Monsters Zoh Shia and Jin Dahaad are immune to Pitfall Traps and monsters Rey Dau, Gypceros, and Zoh Shia are immune to Shock Traps. Once the monster is trapped, quickly use a tranquilizer before it breaks free.

Benefit of Capturing Monsters

By capturing a monster, not only will you finish the fight earlier, but you’ll also get three additional Target Reward materials. Capturing will also help get you more certificates and sacs. Besides that, there isn’t too much of a difference between killing and capturing when it comes to materials.
