The Rise of the Ronin– Horse Rescue side quest is one of the many helper quests across the land. After a man’s horse has been stolen, he asks you to retrieve it for him before it’s sold off by the thieves. Along the way, you have the option to take down the thieves and gather the information you need or take a stealthier approach and spare their lives. The choice is yours.

To begin the Rise of the Ronin– Horse Rescue side quest, go to Yamashita and find the Horse Race quest marker on your map. You’ll find a man who is complaining loudly that his horse was stolen. He asks for your help and you have two dialogue options.
- “What’s so special about this horse?”
- “How do I recognize it?”
By selecting either option, he tells you that the horse has a white coat and begs you to bring it back. After this, you have two more dialogue options.
- “I’ll get it back for you.”
- “I’ll think about it.”
Select “I’ll get it back for you” to begin the quest. He tells you that the thieves went towards a checkpoint but he’s unsure of their exact location.
Find the Thieves
Your next objective is to track down the thieves. The objective is about 455 m away from the client, so you can either fast travel to an already discovered veil banner nearby or take your horse. There is a group of thieves at the small settlement when you arrive, so you must proceed carefully. You have a main objective, which is to eavesdrop on the thieves, and an opinion objective, which is to defeat all six horse thieves.
Should you decide to take the more violent, confrontational route, you’ll have to find and kill all six thieves. They can be found inside the surrounding buildings, on top of the buildings, or roaming the area outside of the buildings. You can acquire Sulfur, Medicine Pills, Bamboo Sheath, Shuriken, and more by looting the thieves. Once all have been defeated, you will have the location of the horse trader, to whom the thieves sold it.
If you choose not to kill anyone, sneak around and listen to the thieves until you overhear where the horse trader is.
Find the Horse Trader
Once you have the horse trader’s location, head to the new objective nearby. The trader is standing outside of the building with the white horse next to him and you have two dialogue options.
- “I want the white horse.”
- “Any horses you’ve bought recently.”
Whichever option you choose, the man says the white horse won’t come cheap. You have three options after this.
- “Sold!” (Pay for the horse)
- “That horse is stolen.” (Needs speechcraft “persuade”)
- “I’ll have to think about it.”
The best option is to select “That horse is stolen”. The man is very understanding and lets you take it back to its owner free of charge. The first option forces you to pay for the horse with your own money. The last option gives you the chance to leave and come back after you’ve unlocked “persuade” or after you’ve collected the money you need to buy it.
Rewards for the Rise of the Ronin- Horse Rescue Side Quest
By whatever means you choose to get the horse, once you have it, return to the client who hired you and hand over the horse. You’ll have to ride it all the way back to him and it’s a good distance to travel.
Rewards for finishing the Rise of the Ronin– Horse Rescue side quest are Old Jar (Small), Flat Basket, Power Remedy, and Military Tack for your horse.
