The Rise of the Ronin– The Black Jewel side quest requires you to find the missing clothes of a mysterious foreigner who was robbed by brigands. They’ve retreated into the mines and he requests that you go after them and pick up some coal along the way, with the promise of a handsome reward should you succeed. This is the quest that unlocks your acquaintance with Marcus Samuel.

To begin the Rise of the Ronin- The Black Jewel side quest, go to the banner in Ota, where you’ll find a half-naked man next to it. Approach and speak to the Mysterious Foreigner. He notices that you’re a samurai and asks for your help, for which he promises a reward. He explains that he is a merchant from Great Britain who recently located some coal in a cave nearby. While he was investigating, a band of brigands attacked and stripped him of his clothes. He asks if you can fetch his clothes for him and you have two dialogue options.
- “I’ll do it.”
- “I cannot.”
Select “I’ll do it” to continue the quest.
Find the Coal In Rise Of The Ronin
Your new quest objective is to retrieve the mysterious foreigner’s luggage and gather 2 coal. Use your horse to travel to the marker, which is roughly 150 m away. When you arrive, a brigand will be guarding the entrance to the mine. You can fight him or crouch and sneak up behind him.
About halfway down the cave, you’ll run into another brigand that you’ll have to fight. Looting him gives you Bamboo, Medical Pill, Oak Geta. After this, you can use the tall plants in the cave to sneak up on the next three brigands or fight them head on. Rewards for looting them include a Polearm, Sohpicate’s Sandals, Continental Sabre, Hollandophile’s Casuals, Long Work Gloves, and more.
Go left to find the coal. At the bottom of the drop off, you’ll see crates and coal, but another enemy will stand in your way. You can pull yourself back out of this area with your grappling rope once you defeat the enemy and collect the coal.
If you take the other path in the cave, you’ll run across an archer. You can take him down with a bow and arrow or use your grappling hook to bring him towards you.
Find the Luggage In Rise Of The Ronin
Continue searching the cave and you’ll find three enemies surrounding a big brown suitcase. Kill them and retrieve the mysterious foreigner’s luggage. You can use your grappling hook to exit the cave quickly and return to the coal and the luggage to the man.
The mysterious foreigner introduces himself as Marcus Samuel. He is grateful and wants to reward you but the thieves emptied his wallet. He invites you to Yokohama Grand Villa, where he promises to reward you there. You have four dialogue options.
- “Even if you were lying, it wouldn’t bother me.”
- “I never doubted you for a second.”
- “…Are you sure about that?”
- “You trying to get out of paying me?” (Needs Speechcraft “Intimidate”)
By selecting the final one, the man insists he will pay you and then leaves.
