This substory, aptly titled “Saved By Kindness,” is a captivating tale of generosity, deception, and the power of human connection in the world of Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth.

CHAPTER 3 – A CHANCE ENCOUNTER

This specific substory can be found during chapter 3, when exploring the vibrant world of East Waikiki. Here we will come across a troubled man on his knees, named Sawai. Approaching him triggers the beginning of this intriguing substory. Sawai, lost and in need of assistance, is grateful when the protagonist, Ichiban, offers to help him find his hotel. Little do they know, this encounter is merely the beginning of a series of unexpected events.

THE WEB OF DECEPTION

With the help of a local, Sawai and Ichiban successfully locate the hotel. However, their journey takes a sinister turn when they encounter a police officer accusing Sawai of jaywalking. Threatening to fine him, the officer manipulates Sawai into making a “donation” to the police department. This encounter sets the stage for the scams that follow.

Next, a seemingly kind-hearted woman approaches Sawai and presents him with a t-shirt bearing the words “Love Hawaii.” However, her true intentions quickly become apparent when she demands $50 for the shirt, using the same donation box as the police officer. Sawai, driven by his desire to feel needed, reluctantly hands over the money.

Just as Sawai begins to question his gullibility, a parrot named Perry lands on his shoulder. Soon, another stranger appears and requests money in exchange for a picture with the parrot. Sawai, once again, falls victim to the scam, paying a hefty sum for a commemorative photo.

A MEAL AND REVELATIONS

The Saved By Kindness substory continues after enduring a series of scams, Sawai invites Ichiban to a meal at Oahu Burger, intending to express his gratitude. As they dine, Ichiban is given the opportunity to choose between three dialogue options: The t-shirt woman? The man with the parrot? The lei girl? Selecting “The lei girl?” strengthens Ichiban’s Friendship stat and paves the way for a deeper understanding of Sawai’s experiences.

Sawai opens up about his past, revealing that he came to Hawaii to escape the pressures of his former life as a businessman. A minor complaint from a customer escalated into the loss of a major deal, leading to strained work relationships and verbal abuse from his boss. Eventually, Sawai was relegated to a menial task, shredder duty. This erosion of his self-confidence left him afraid to interact with others, until his encounter with Ichiban.

WILLING PARTICIPANT OR WILLING VICTIM?

Returning to Mama Masala’s, Sawai is once again seen with the lei girl, Kiana. Onlookers express their disbelief at Sawai’s continued generosity, but he remains steadfast in his actions. Ichiban has the option to tell Sawai about the scams or remain silent, but regardless of the choice made, Sawai is already aware of Kiana’s true intentions. He confesses that he willingly participates in the scams because it allows him to see her.

As the story progresses, Ichiban witnesses Kiana eavesdropping on their conversation, adding an air of mystery to her character. The fragile balance between truth and deception becomes increasingly precarious, leading to the climax of this enthralling substory.

A VIOLENT TURN

Following Sawai and Kiana to a parking lot, Ichiban finds them facing off against a group of thugs. Determined to protect Kiana, Sawai’s newfound companion, Ichiban engages in a fierce battle to rescue her from harm. The parking lot, conveniently located near Tony’s lemonade stand, becomes the backdrop for a dramatic showdown.
