After building the Bedar and crafting cannons at the Blacksmith, he will give you quests requiring you to defeat Compagnie ships. The second of these quests, titled “Unwelcome Aboard”, involves defeating Compagnie Skirmishers to get 3 Cogwheels for the Blacksmith. The quest includes optionally getting a Culverin as well.
Where to Find Compagnie Skirmishers in Skull and Bones
Once you board your ship to set sail, press “M” to open the map. The quest indicator will mark the area where the Skirmishers can be found. The marker is found in an uncharted part of the sea past the island of Saine-Anne.
Once you’ve reached the mark area, press the “R” key to use your spyglass. Search the horizon to find a ship in range and use the spyglass to scan it. Scan a ship in range to see what kind of ship it is and what loot it is carrying. This area of the sea is filled with Skirmishes carrying cogwheels, making it really easy to find one.
While in the spyglass screen, press the right mouse button on the ship to mark it. Hit the escape button to return to the main screen. The ship you’ve marked will be shown on your compass and will have a golden beam of light shining on it.
How to Get Cogwheels in Skull and Bones
To get Cogwheels, you need to destroy the Skirmishers carrying them. Each destroyed Skirmisher will carry one or two Cogwheels, so you’ll need to defeat at maximum three Skirmishers to complete the challenge. Since other players will be in the seas alongside you, you can team up momentarily to defeat a horde of Skirmishers and complete the challenge.
Since this quest comes shortly after crafting the Bedar, I recommend using the ramming capabilities of the ship to their fullest potential. Start by hitting the Skirmishers with a few cannon balls. Afterward, ram into them to give them the flooded effect. This will take them down pretty quickly compared to just shooting them.
After sinking or boarding a Skirmisher, take the Cogwheels and other items it carries as your loot.
How to Get a Culverin in Skull and Bones
While the Culverin is optional in completing the quest, I recommend getting one now so that you’ll know how to do it.
Culverins will not drop from a sunken ship like Cogwheels will. Instead, a Culverin can only be obtained by having your crew board a damaged ship. To do so, you’ll need to start by damaging the ship you want to board. If you’re using a Bedar, I’d recommend only damaging it with cannons as ramming it and giving it the flooded effect could potentially sink the ship before you can board it.
Once the ship is damaged, sail your ship very close to the damaged ship. Click the right mouse button as if you were aiming the cannons. A prompt at the bottom of the screen will tell you to press “R” to board the enemy ship. If the ropes connect from your ship to the enemy vessel, you’ll board them to gain a little extra loot, which can include a Culverin.
How to Deliver the Cogwheel in Skull and Bones
After gathering all of the Cogwheels you need, set sail back to Sainte-Anne. Land on its shore and head back to the Blacksmith. Press “F” to speak with him, then select the “Unwelcome Aboard” quest in his interface.
The quest will say that you have not delivered the Cogwheels, but that’s not a cause for concern. Press the space bar to submit the quest to the Blacksmith. Submitting the quest will give the Cogwheels to the Blacksmith, completing the quest. This will unlock the “Dressed to Kill” and “Strike the Iron” quests.
