Megabonk will throw you into either the Forest or Desert map and bombard you with enemies of varying strengths and sizes. The game is meant to be difficult, so new players will certainly have to deal with a bit of a headache when starting out. But for players who crave a challenge or those who want to enter the leaderboard, the difficulty stat may be something to look out for.
Here’s how difficulty works in Megabonk and how to increase it.
What is the Difficulty stat in Megabonk
Difficulty is one of the stats in Megabonk that can make or break a run. Essentially, this stat makes the game harder by spawning more enemies and bosses, and by making the bosses much beefier.
At higher difficulties, enemies will start piling up if they’re not dealt with quickly, and bosses will take some time to eliminate. So besides the challenge, why bother adding more difficulty if it only makes the run tougher?

Well, this is a high-risk high-reward move. By increasing the difficulty, you’ll get more EXP and Gold as more enemies get spawned, and you’ll get access to more chests. At default difficulty, you may only reach around level 80-150 but a higher difficulty can bring you to level 1000 and above.
How to Increase Difficulty in Megabonk
Unlike other games, you cannot select a difficulty level before entering a run. Instead, you’ll start at 0% difficulty and will need to work your way up if you want to bump it higher. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to increase it.
- Greed Shrines: A Greed Shrine is a small shrine that, when activated, adds 5% difficulty. You can find them by looking for small skull shrines or the shrine marked with an orange icon on the minimap.
- Charge Shrine: Upon successfully charging a shrine, there’s a chance for difficulty to increase.
- Cursed Tome: This is the most reliable method of increasing difficulty in Megabonk. Unlock the Cursed Tome (also known as the Difficulty Tome) by defeating a stage boss within 5 minutes. Once unlocked, obtain this tome and level it up.
- Items: Some items can also increase difficulty, such as Skuleg, which boosts difficulty by 8%, and Cursed Grabbies, which boosts it by 10%.
