The Final Fantasy VII Rebirth- Esoteric Secrets of the Elders side quest can be found in the Nibel Region during Chapter 11. This is a quest done with Yuffie.
Beginning the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth- Esoteric Secrets of the Elders Quest
To begin the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth- Esoteric Secrets of the Elders side quest, find the Chocobo Sage’s Request on your map. When you reach the location, you’ll find a kid named Billy who you met earlier in the game. An old man called the Chocobo Sage, introduces himself and they talk about the Chocobo race.
Yuffie points out that the training that the old man is making Billy do is actually manual labor. She asks Cloud if he sees it too and he has three dialogue options.
- “The man’s not a sage.”
- “It is pretty weird.”
- “This sage is the real deal.”
Selecting the middle option is your best bet. The Sage tells you that you need to find a Chocobo named Selena who likes the ocean. Billy convinces Cloud to do it for him.
Chocobo Intel: Feathered Waverunners
You start the Chocobo Intel: Feathered Waverunners quest. Fast travel to Nibel Airstrip, where you’ll have to sneak past the Chocobos using the tall grass. Your objective is to lure the blue one away from the cacti and capture her.
Go up the hill to the right of the yellow Chocobo and pick up bait as you go. When you get to the top of the hill and can see the blue Chocobo, use L1 to aim the bait and Square to throw. Using the bait will draw Selena in the direction you want her to go.
Throw the bait at even intervals and not too far apart, and she’ll run up to it. Do this to lead her toward the moving cacti. Time it right so she doesn’t run into the cacti as they expand or she’ll turn away. Lead her through the path of cacti until she is next to the yellow Chocobo and free. Once she is next to the tall grass, sneak up to her and mount her.
Your reward for completing Chocobo Intel: Feathered Waverunners is EXP and a ocean Chocobo. Take her back to the Sage.
Find 30 Chocograss
The Sage will then ask you to get Chocograss, which grows above bodies of water. He tells you that you can use the ocean Chocobo you just rescued, Selena, to get it. While in the water, use L2 to Chocojet and R2 to Glide. Collect 30 chocograss scattered around the area.
Once you’ve finished, return to the Sage. The Sage admits these errands were meant to train you. He gives you a final task: to race him. If Cloud wins, the Sage promises to tell Billy about his dad and Uncle Sam, whom he trained. When the sage asks if you’re prepared to take the final trail, select yes.
The Race
The next trial involves racing the Sage on the back of a Chocobo. Use R1 to dash and aim for the floating fruit while avoiding moving obstacles. The race is three laps long. Once you win, the old man will ask what you’d like to know about Billy’s dad and Uncle Sam. Cloud has three options.
- “Nothing.”
- “When were they here?”
- “What were they doing here?”
By selecting nothing, the Sage reveals he was giving Billy ridiculous tasks to give him time to get over his revenge.
