The Final Fantasy VII Rebirth- Lament of the Damned side quest can be found in the Nibel Region during Chapter 12. Barret is your companion for this quest. Lament of the Damn automatically unlocks at the beginning of Chapter 12.
Beginning the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth- Lament of the Damned Side Quest
To begin the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth- Lament of the Damned side quest, find the Supervisor’s Request on your map. He’ll be in the Town Hall in Nibelheim. Once you find him inside, talk to him. He’ll ask you what you need this time and you have three options.
- “Wanna know about Wutaian fighters.”
- “Need info on the black robes.”
- “Would like to learn about Shinra Manor.”
Select the last one to continue with this quest. However, the man admits doesn’t know much about it and the work there was sensitive information.
When the next dialogue option pops up, select “Nothing”. The man says that he’s been hearing a woman’s wailing since he saw Cloud and his party go inside Shinra Manor. He thinks that you had something to do with it and that it’s your responsibility to check it out.
Head to Shinra Manor
Return to Shinra Manor. Once inside, Vincent takes the lead and says he feels something below them. Head left and to the elevator. When your options pop up, select the one with the quest marker next to it that says “Mako Research Facility- Sub-basement”. When they get to the sub-basement, Vincent gives Cloud his keycard so he can access the lower levels.
Preliminary Trails
You’ll eventually reach the Mako Research Combat Simulator room and you can’t continue until you beat it. There are four trails. “Preliminary Trail: Aerial Specimens” is the first trial. You get to select three teammates to fight with you during the simulation. You have to fight and kill all four fiends, called Scrutineye, within a minute and thirty seconds. Their defeat gives you EXP and AP. Beating the trail on time rewards you with a Giga-Potion.
“Preliminary Trail: Ruthless Specimens” is the name of the second trial. You have to fight and defeat three Amalgams and an Adjudicator. You have the same time limit. Defeating the fiends gives you EXP and AP. The reward for finishing the trail on time is Dry Ether.
“Preliminary Trail: Comparable Specimens” is the name of the third trial. You have to fight and defeat two Necrotic Entities and a creature called Yin & Yang. In this trail, you also have to stagger an enemy three times. The time limit is changed to two minutes and thirty seconds. If you finish the trail on time then you’re rewarded with a Mist Mega-Potion.
The fourth and final trial is called “Preliminary Trail: Bioselected Specimens”. You have to fight a Yin & Yang and an Adjudicator. You are given two minutes to stagger two enemies and kill them both. Your reward for finishing the trail on time is an Item Master Materia.
The Dranabarga
Once you have successfully finished all four trails, you can finally move on. When you reach the next room, you’ll be met with another one of Hojo’s holograms and a fiend called the Dranabarga. Your party discovers that this is the creature that has been making the wailing noises.
It is a difficult creature to defeat. Switch between your party members and utilize their skills to wear it down. Once it’s defeated, you are rewarded with 413 gil and a beast talon.

You’ll be rewarded for completing the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth- Lament of the Damned side quest with Hojo’s Exams, the Art of Swordplay Vol. VI from Vincent, SP, party EXP, EXP for Cloud, and your relationship with Barret deepens.
