Locating this area can be quite difficult since you have to cut through the Shadow Keep and the Dark Light Catacombs. Map pieces are useful and worth finding since they unfog new areas of your map.
How to Find the Abyss Map Piece in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree
To find the Abyss map piece, begin at the Main Gate Plaza in front of Shadow Keep. Go through the gate on the right. If it is locked, take the long path around the left.
If you go through the gate, go up the stairs. When you reach what looks like a dining hall, take the doorway on the left. Follow the path past the glowing boats. Near the end, there is a ladder on the left. Take the ladder down. Behind the waterfall next to the ladder is a secret hallway with another ladder at the end.
The Secret Doorway in the Shadow Keep
Follow the walkway on your right. There is an orange painting on the far side of the room. Approach it and hit it with a melee attack. Turn around and there is a blank wall to your left. You can slightly see the outline of a doorway. Approach it and melee attack the wall. A secret hallway appears. Follow the path down and approach the open casket. A cutscene plays of your character getting in it.
After the cut scene, exit the room and you’ll be in Scadu Altus. Mount your horse to avoid enemies and traverse the terrain faster. Go straight and then hang a slight right, going past the giant fire enemy. You’ll see a gap between the cliffs. When you reach the canyon, take the path on the left side. Follow it until you reach a point where the gap is narrow enough for you to cross over to the right side. Continue along the path until it ends and jump down deeper into the canyon.
Enter the Dark Light Catacombs
At the very bottom of the canyon, you’ll come across a door in the cliff with two braziers on either side. Enter the Dark Light Catacombs. At the bottom of the elevator, go down the dark corridor and take the first right. At the bottom of the stairs, go down the hallway to your right. You will eventually come across a ladder. When you reach the bottom, go around the enemy throwing projectiles at you and go down the hallway behind him.
Continue following the path through the catacombs, going deeper and deeper. At the very bottom, there is a doorway filled with mist. Traverse the mist.
Defeat Jori, Elder Inquisitor Boss
The mist teleports you to a new location, where you have to fight Jori, Elder Inquisitor. Once he’s defeated, leave through the doorway he was originally blocking at the beginning of the fight. Keep going until you reach Abyssal Woods.
Abyss Map Piece Location
Head downhill towards the giant tree with the Lost Grace waypoint in front of it. Head southeast of the Lost Grace, towards the path, and then follow it until you come across water. In the distance is a ruined building. In front of it is the map piece.
