A Stubborn Master is an Octopath Traveler 0 side quest that requires you to find a suitable apprentice for a hard to please master. The quest takes place in Rippletide and Theatropolis.

How to Start and Complete A Stubborn Master Side Quest in Octopath Traveler 0
The Stubborn Master side story becomes available once you begin The Finale main quest. Make your way to Rippletide and find the aging fisherman and his daughter in the southern part of the town.
Interact with them to begin the quest. Your task is to find an apprentice who matches the fisherman’s impossible standards.
Where to Find an Apprentice for the Fisherman in Octopath Traveler 0
First Candidate
Go to the Rippletide docks and interact with the NPC wearing a blue headband. Return to the fisherman and witness the interaction. The old man reads the candidate’s temper based on his appearance. The dock worker is not worthy to become a fisherman, so the search continues. The daughter then suggests that a chef might have what it takes to be a fisherman.
Second Candidate
Enter the Rippletide tavern and talk to the NPC standing near the counter. The fisherman seems pleased with this candidate, so he proposes a hands-on test. Unfortunately, the chef proves to be seasick and he declines the offer. The Octopath Traveler 0 Stubborn Master then lists his requirements and you realize that finding the perfect apprentice is not an easy task.
Third Candidate
The quest to please the old fisherman takes you to Theatropolis in the Flatlands Region. Close to the entrance, you will run into the Introspective Youth NPC.
Use the Inquire path action to learn more about him. It might be hard to believe, but the young man checks all the requirements. Use the Hire action to recruit the Introspective Youth.
Return to the fisherman in Rippletide. The interview goes great, however, it looks like the young man has developed a passion for exploration, so he leaves. There’s only one candidate remaining, you. The fisherman gracefully accepts your refusal and gives you a reward nonetheless. For your patience in putting up with such A Stubborn Master, you receive a Rainbow Shell Charm and a Quality Whiskey.
