One Small Step – Starfield

Game Guides Starfield

One Small Step is the very first main story mission quest within Starfield. Here we are seen riding down an elevator and into a mine. Alongside our companions Supervisor Lin and Heller.

These mines are quite small and linear. However, it is a key location for learning the basics.

FOLLOW SUPERVISOR LIN

The beginning of this quest is simple. All you need to do is follow Supervisor Lin. Our companions names are highlighted whenever you try to interact with them, so you should get a good idea on who is who. And who we are meant to be following.

Whilst we are down here there will be many other miners. Some of which we can speak to but none of which hold any interesting information.

Exploring the mines during One Small Step

GET THE CUTTER IN ONE SMALL STEP

After following Lin for a short while she will then stop at a yellow crate box. We will be required to collect the Cutter. Which is technically the piece of equipment that the miners are using. It is used to collect materials and minerals.

COLLECT MINERAL DEPOSITS

We can use this Cutter by pressing and holding the RT button on the Series X controller. We can now collect our first mineral ingredient, the Beryllium.

RETURN TO SUPERVISOR LIN

After successfully managing to collect the required minerals we will now need to report back to Lin. Who will be waiting for us at the yellow box, where we originally found the Cutter. Yes, she has not moved from her original position.

FOLLOW SUPERVISOR LIN

Once again follow Lin and she will lead us to a dead end wall, where two miners, including Heller, is managing a large drill. Basically they are trying to break down the wall. So wait for them to do that.

EXPLORE THE CAVERN IN ONE SMALL STEP QUEST

The path is, again, rather linear. So just continue on. No need to follow your team mates. We can now activate our flashlight using the LB button, this time. You will likely need to press and hold it until it switches on. Same for switching it off again.

As you continue on Heller is mention some weird gravity readings. Ignore him as there is no need to turn back. At the end of this path we will come across a strange tree-like root in the ground.

BREAK UP THE DEPOSITS

Use the Cutter on this strange root as there is a foreign object that we need inside of it. Once you have access to it there will be a scene and we will wake up and be able to customise our character.

CHARACTER CUSTOMIZATION

There is 40 different Personnel Records that we can cycle through and choose from. These are basically our character face portraits. What they will look like and their hair styles.

Though as the game, itself, mentions, the Biometric customizations can be changed later by visiting a genetics facility. Meaning, if you dislike your original choice of Personnel Records appearance you can change it. As it is part of the Biometric ID.

Character customization becomes available during the One Small Step quest

ONE SMALL STEP CHARACTER BACKGROUND

There are multiple character backgrounds to choose from. Such as; Beast Hunter, Bouncer, Bounty Hunter, Chef, Combat Medic, Cyber Runner, Cyberneticist, Diplomat and more. There is a total of 20 to choose from altogether.

Each ones comes with its own set perks and skills. For example the Beast Hunter is good for Fitness, Ballistics and Gastronomy. Whilst the Bouncer is more for those seeking better skills and training in combat as it gives the Boxing skill, alongside both Security and Fitness. Other backgrounds, such as the Cyber Runner is capable of Stealth and Theft.

This is really dependant on your playstyle.

FOLLOW LIN IN ONE SMALL STEP

After creating your character we will then be given our very first set of dialogue options to choose from. Pick whichever you want. Then it will be time to follow Lin, once again.

EQUIP A HELMET

She will take us to the air lock where we will be tasked with equipping a helmet before we can go out into space. We can equip a helmet by going into the menu screen, otherwise known as the DATA Menu.

Once in the DATA Menu just scroll to the bottom right, where we will find the inventory section. Here we will be given a list of categories, including weapons and helmets. Equip a helmet to continue. We are looking for the Deep Mining Space Helmet.

MEET WITH THE CLIENT

Our client for this operation and the one who paid for the excavation in the mine will arrive by ship. His name is Barrett.

HOLD OFF THE PIRATES

During the conversation it would seem that Barrett was being followed. We will now have our first combat encounter. Against the pirates. Otherwise known as the Crimson Fleet. Remember to loot them for additional materials, such as Maelstrom and Ripshank.

We can also find the EON Pistol in a small yellow cargo box by the bridge. Grab it or use the Cutter instead to solve our current problem.

SPEAK WITH BARRETT

The client of the operation will now want to recruit us into the Constellation team. Meaning we will be leaving this area using the ship he came in from. We will also be accompanied by the mechanical robot, Vasco. The ship is known as the Frontier.

TAKE OFF FROM VECTERA

Feel free to explore the Frontier ship before making your way to the pilot seat and begin to take off. This will introduce us to the space flight mechanics and the combat. Which is actually one of the more fun aspects to the game. Though, might be confusing at first too.

ONE SMALL STEP SPACE FLIGHT

When you first attempt to control the Frontier space craft you will likely be in first-person mode. Though, there is the option to toggle into third-person, which might be easier. We can do this by accessing the ‘View’ button on the Xbox Series controller.

On the Hud we will have several different weapons to choose from, such as; BAL, MSL and LAS. Which is basically your missiles and lasers. We will need to remember this as they will prove to be useful in just a minute.

We also have the Boost option, which essentially increases our speed. However, there is also a meter and once it depletes we will be forced to remain at a more slow and steady pace. Obviously, Speed can increase our overall speed but that too comes with a limited timed meter. We can increase our Boost and Speed by using the LS button. Press and hold it for the Boost and manoeuver it back and forth for the Speed.

DEAL WITH THE CRIMSON FLEET

We will now be attacked by several ‘space pirates’. Use your knowledge so far to eliminate them. I said the weapon missiles will be needed here. These ships are quick so you might loose them from your field of view.

To begin with we will be faced against one ship. So use this time to get used to the flight controls. Once they have been destroyed they will, sometimes, leave materials and rubble. We can collect these materials by first finding them. They are often marked. Then interact with them through the ‘A’ button. This will reveal what the ship contained and its valuables.

We encounter the Starfield Crimson Fleet during One Small Step

TRAVEL TO KREET IN ONE SMALL STEP QUEST

Our next destination is the planet Kreet. It will be marked on your map after eliminating the Crimson Fleet. Alternatively, you can also access the DATA Menu and scroll over to STARMAP.

This will tell us what planet we are currently on, or one that we left. In this case. Vectera. Navigate to the System Menu and this will bring up the solar system. There will be many planets here that we can discover.

The planet Kreet is on the left side. By the planet Anselon. It’s a rather small planet in comparison.

DEAL WITH THE CRIMSON CAPTAIN

Land in the planet Kreet. It is time to confront the Crimson Captain. Here we will confront some of the local wildlife, like the Trilobite. For example. Which are completely harmless and drop Nutrients (Carapace)

Whilst we continue on in search for the Crimson Captain we will be given a quick tutorial on the Scanner. Which is a super handy and useful tool. It can be used to scan the nearby environment for any materials that we can find. Such as Iron and Lead. It can also provide a waypoint to our current destination and assigned quest.

Enter the facility in order to continue the search for the Crimson Fleet Captain. Feel free to explore. We can locate some Medical Kits and even a log book (Omega: The Last Days). Which mentions a comet is set to collide with Earth in the 25th century. Bringing an end to the world.

Vasco will find some markings that are related to the United Colonies but will continue to mention that we are currently in Freestar Collective space. Making this particular building a secret UC facility. Continue to Lab 01. Where we will encounter more Crimson Pirates

RESEARCH 01

Find Research 01. It will be in a room full of pirates, dispose of them and head on up the nearby stairs. At the top of these stairs is Research 01. Inside is a weapon case containing the Equinox, Laser Rifle. Make your way to the Office.

OFFICE

Inside the Office is a computer terminal that we can use. Interact with it to find and locate two files. One on Terrormorph Specimen and another on NCI Fitting Today. Proceed to the Storage room.

STORAGE

Inside the Storage Vasco will mention that he can detect a safe nearby. This will give us a tutorial on lockpicking safes using Digipicks.

How to use the Digipicks in Starfield and One Small Step quest

To lockpick a safe you will be presented with a small mini game where you will need to connect each of the linked picks. Sometimes we will be given three of these picks, sometimes more and, other times, less.

Once the safe has been opened and unlocked we will receive 32 7.77MM Caseless ammunition, 665 Credits and Modified EON. Which adds Reflex Sight and Large Magazine.

Head on up to the Roof Access. Here we will meet up with Brogan, who is determined to get our Frontier ship. Apparently they know of the Artefact treasure and they want it. He is also the Crimson Captain.

PERSUADE BROGAN OR ELIMINATE HIM IN ONE SMALL STEP

Here, whilst speaking with Brogan, we will have two options. We can either try to persuade him to leave our ship alone. Alternatively, we can just attempt to kill him. Upon defeat Brogan will drop Rapid Modified Maelstrom, 10 6.5MM CT, 34 7.77MM Caseless, Med Pack and a Modified Grendel.

The Modified Maelstrom gives a Medium Scope, Muzzle Brake, Armor-Piercing Rounds and Semi-Automatic. Whilst the Grendel supplies a Short Barrel.

Persuading the Crimson Fleet Captain Brogan in One Small Step

Alternatively, if you want to try the persuasion method you will need to select the correct dialogue choice. There will be many to choose from. Each one will give points towards persuasion. Score enough points to get an alternative ending to the situation.

Persuasion is part of the speech challenge. And you will also receive 10 XP. On top of this if you still want the weapon modifiers you can then proceed and attack Brogan after. Occasionally the Modified Maelstrom will be replaced with a Berserker Rescue Axe.

RETURN TO THE SHIP

Whatever way you decide to deal with Brogan we will need to make our way back to the Frontier ship. We can fast travel there by accessing the StarMap menu and selecting the Frontier. Our next destination is the planet Jemison. To do this we will need to activate Grav Jump.

HOW TO ACTIVATE GRAV JUMP

To activate Grav Jump and remove the GRAV Jump Pending message in Starfield, simply detect a nearby planet that has energy on it. On the bottom left of the ship HUD there is the ENG, SHD and GRV options. These stand for Energy, Shield and Gravity. Use the directional pad to cycle through these options.

Locate the planet with energy, these are usually nearby and are quite big in size. Then hold down on the pad to deplete it of its energy. Our ENG bar will fill. Now cycle over to GRV and use the up button on the directional pad to activate the Grav Jump. This will now take us to Alpha Centauri

How to activate the Grav Jump in Starfield

LAND AT NEW ATLANTIS

We now need to land at New Atlantis. Where Barrett’s colleagues and the Constellation team reside. Once you arrive proceed and follow the quest marker to find the tram. This tram will take us to the Mast District. Proceed and enter the library.

TALK TO SARAH IN ONE SMALL STEP

Speak with Sarah and she will wonder where Barrett is. Place the Artefact on to the table to complete the One Small Step quest. We will unlock the One Small Step trophy achievement and we will be rewarded with 400 XP, 8000 Credits, Lodge Key and a Constellation Pack

ONE SMALL STEP

CONSTELLATION

Whatever I found in the mine knocked me out cold. Now whoever paid for this whole operation is making a landing, and we need to meet him.

Barrett wants me to take the Artefact to his colleagues in Constellation. I’ll have his ship, the Frontier, and his robot Vasco for the journey.
