How to Complete The Blood of Dawnwalker Withering Away

Withering Away is the most important and longest quest you will complete during the prologue. Esme’s survival depends on your choices.

After chopping wood for the fire and taking your clothes from the chest, you will assist at the dinner scene. Esme refuses to eat, but you have the option to force feed her.

This first choice doesn’t affect the game, so feel free to do as you please. The next step of the quest requires you to get medicinal herbs from Anca. Follow the quest marker to Anca’s hut and then to the river. You have the option to call Anca or observe her from afar.

If you choose to keep on looking, you will notice the scars on her arms and unlock additional dialogue options. When speaking with Anca, you can select “Hope I’m not interrupting anything” and then ask about the scars. If you choose to call Anca, you still have the chance to see her scars during the Page Turner quest later on. After collecting the herbs for Esme, Anca asks you to pay for them.

If you say you cannot afford the herbs, you get them for free with the option to return with the payment later. During the storm, you can practice Latin with Anca.

This will trigger the Page Turner quest, during which you can spend more time together and take the first steps towards romancing Anca. This option costs time. If you want to complete other side quests before heading home, say that you have to go. Alternatively, complete the Page Turner quest and go home afterwards. Skipping the Page Turner quest doesn’t affect your romance, but it locks you out of several flirtatious moments.

How to Prepare the Medicine for Esme

Brewing the medicine for Esme is the last step of The Blood of Dawnwalker Withering Away quest. If you’ve forgotten Anca’s instructions, you can check the note in your inventory. To prepare the medicine, you need to select the following choices:

• Use hot water.
• Add three spoonfuls of herbs.

Preparing the medicine the wrong way has negative consequences, but you won’t be able to witness them until the Blood Mass scene. If you don’t brew the potion correctly, Esme doesn’t get any better and dies during the ceremony. If you follow the instructions, Esme survives and becomes a prisoner.
